Songs for Ascent by David Robert Jones is a collection of devotional poems based on the poet's personal experience of life. The poems cover a lot of emotions; forgiveness, hatred, betrayal, hurt, loss, growth, love, and hope and it helps readers who are looking for personal growth and optimism in their personal lives. All the poems lean more towards spirituality and devotion. The poems are honest and they make a good read during times of despair. Many of them can motivate readers undergoing personal crises and low phases in their lives.
The first thing that is obvious in the poems is the poet's personal struggles and anguish and how it has influenced his perspective. 'The Next Beatitude' is beautiful, not only in terms of the content but also the formatting which adds to the visual appeal of the poem. The poem titled the same as the book is again another beautifully penned poem that is a depiction of the poet's wonderful imagery and is the highlight of this book. I want to share a beautiful verse from the book here for the readers to fathom the depth of the poet's soul:
Sometimes God loves me.
He reins me
like a banner rainbow bright and beaming.
Sometimes I weep
and my heart breaks
in a meteor invasion,
shining light in tears,
fire streaked.
The whole collection has poems that strike a chord within readers. The writer's feelings of personal pain and anguish are palpable in these poems. It is the very dignified and graceful work of a talented poet.
