Debra Shiveley Welch bares her soul in this book. She shares the rejection she felt as a child. Debra’s mother had miscarried before giving birth to Debra. Debra’s grandmother doted on her until her mother remarried and had a son. Suddenly Debra was pushed aside. The marriage was rocky and it was up to Debra to take care of herself and her siblings. She worked, went to school and cared for her brother because her mother would leave for days at a time. Debra raised her brother and sister. Debra survived two broken marriages. With time Debra learned to forgive her family.
From childhood Debra showed strength and courage. She and her loving husband were given the opportunity to adopt a child that desperately needed them. Many would find his care too much to handle. Debra took him into her home and her heart.
While Debra shares her tragic childhood with readers it is not an attempt to gain sympathy but to help us understand where she came from and how that impacted the adoption of Christopher. I’ve always believed that hardships make or break us. They prepare us for our future. While Debra’s childhood was a nightmare it prepared her for the future by giving her courage, strength and a will to love unconditionally. Someday Christopher will read this book and very so proud of his mom. God has a way of working things out when we allow him to have has way.
