Son of a Preacher Man is a work of romantic and dramatic fiction by author Karen M Cox, and is told with a southern states atmosphere. The son of the book’s title is Billy Ray Davenport, a young man whose travelling lifestyle comes to a halt when he takes a small job in a local doctor’s office to get some experience before starting medical school. Whilst he’s working in Orchard Hill, he takes up lodgings with a local family, learning the ways of the town and the reputation of the folks there. One reputation in particular is that of the free-spirited and beautifully complex Lizzie Quinlan, and from there the seeds of first love bloom.
Karen M Cox has a talent for character, and everyone in Orchard Hill comes to life with her well-painted words. Lizzie bursts into the book with effortless energy, beguiling us as well as Billy when she hits the scene, and I really enjoyed discovering her personality and the motivations for her unusual behavior as time went on. Billy too is more than your average hero, and I loved the fact that Son of a Preacher Man tells a love story that is realistic to actual life experience, whilst still capturing so much of the idealistic joy of a romance tale. The romantic scenes are clean enough for all readers to enjoy and the overall book creates a comforting, nostalgic feel that fans of Karen M Cox would surely be delighted to revisit in the future.
