"Somewhere Between Raindrops" by Sandra H. Esch is a good Christian romance story, but more than romance, it is about friendship. The year is 1945 and the place is a small town in Minnesota named Amber Leaf. The main character is Jo Bremley. She has recently lost her husband and is trying to re-start her life. Jo is planning to re-locate to New York, but when her young daughter, Brue, comes down with the measles, their plans quickly change and she is forced to stay in Amber Leaf. Tryg Howland was her husband’s best friend, but he must live with the guilt that he was the cause of Case’s tragic death when he hit a deer one night when they were driving home. We also met several other town people, Big Ole the owner of the Inn and his granddaughter Sarah, Lauren Albrecht, Ty’s lady friend, Ardena his stenographer and Pastor Calvin Doherty. Each one has troubles of their own while sharing their love and caring for each other. Tryg offers Jo a job in his office, which she gratefully accepts but soon trouble begins and it always seems to point to Jo threatening her chances of keeping the job. Ardena tries to show Jo support in the office and give her the confidence she needs to stay in the job.
Sandra Esch has given us a very real book, with very special people. I found myself sharing in jealous conflicts, blooming love, sadness and joy. This is a good old-fashioned story with good Christian morals and beliefs. This book is a follow-up to "Tracks in the Snow", but I did not know it and did not read it. "Somewhere Between the Raindrops" stands tall all by itself. I do plan to go back and read it, just because I want to spend more time with Jo, Tryg and the people of Amber Leaf and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of book three.
