Somewhere a Forest by Dr. John H. Griscom is a series of inspirational short tales centered on Jason Rabbit. The first tale begins with love at first sight when our hero meets Jennie, who has a thorn in her paw. After he removes the thorn, he asks her to the Forest Harvest Moon Frolic. Before he can be her escort to the dance, he must first get permission from her father, Grandfather Barfield, who requires Jason to be able to answer the question of what love is all about. Jason begins his quest for knowledge that leads him to ask many different animal friends of the forest. They all seem to have different answers for Jason. By the time Jason feels that he has the answer, the dance is upon him. As the tales continue, the events change as well, from the celebrations of Christmas to Easter and Thanksgiving, until the cycle is complete.
The good doctor John does an extraordinary job of telling these short stories with characters portrayed by animals whose names and personalities are all different and remarkably believable. The name for the song bird, Sofia Lowren, who leads the choir, is just as brilliant as the different stories. This collection of stories in Somewhere in the Forest links three generations of rabbits, their friends and, above all else, their faith in the Great One and his son. As I read these tales, they were described in such vivid detail that I could actually picture them as if they were each televised holiday specials. I would recommend Dr. Griscom’s approach to love and faith with a touch of genuine parody. Well done!
