Someone Like Him is a novel by Ann Herrick. When Emily’s parents advise that they are going on a second honeymoon in Europe, the young New Yorker is horrified. Although she tries to convince her parents that at 15 years of age, she is old enough to take care of herself alone at home, her parents send her to stay with her aunt and uncle in Oregon. A snob to country living, Emily rolls her eyes at anything rural until she meets Bret – a local who is determined to show Emily all of the wonderful things to see and do which make his home town so unique. Suddenly, Emily finds herself discovering hidden treasures amid all of the trees which she never thought possible. Each encounter with Bret sees her falling more and more for the country-dweller, but after a ‘dreaded’ family camping trip, Emily’s life is forever changed.

As a country girl, I was not sure what I would make of Someone Like Him, but quickly found myself unable to stop reading. Filled with adventure, the story had me laughing out loud in some places, while others left me frustrated at Emily’s reluctance to enjoy herself. Emily started out as a New York City snob who looked down on country folk, yet found herself falling for and looking up to one of those people she had once thought were country hicks. Each of the magical landscapes described in Someone Like Him was easy to visualize and I was surprised to find myself able to relate to Emily, regardless of my love of country living. Ann Herrick tells a tale of love, humor and determination in this tale of a budding romance which tugs heavily on the heartstrings. I recommend this book to all who enjoy an unlikely love story filled with adventure.
