Some Days He Growled by N. Kimball Ostrowski is a children's book that captures frailties in friendships. On Halloween night, a ghost meets a wolf, and they quickly become friends. Ghost enjoys the many things he shares in common with the wolf, making for happy days in his life. This friendship, however, is not all smooth sailing because, on some days, the wolf acts differently. Wolf's behavior affects the ghost so much that the ghost does not feel like himself anymore. The wolf tries to salvage the friendship his way, but the ghost realizes that he cannot do this anymore; he has to confront the wolf with a decision.
N. Kimball Ostrowski conveys the theme expertly. The illustrations are spot-on, capturing the plot in a highly relatable way so that they convey the heart of the story very well. The plot is quite complex for young readers, but the message is far-reaching; it can help children make important decisions regarding challenges they may encounter while making and keeping friends. For this reason, it may be useful for parents to read this story with their children and explain more about the theme to help them understand the depth of the message. Ostrowski paces this story in a child-friendly manner by having an illustration on each page along with the narration, which is brief and straight to the point. This strategy helps the young reader absorb the story with a better understanding as the plot unfolds. Some Days He Growled is not just a story but an important lesson on friendship and coping with challenges that emerge in relationships.
