SOL: Still Our Lions, A fan's history of the Detroit Lions and the city they represent by Gary J. Evans is a fan-authored work on the subject that is brilliant and packed with emotion. They say that all NFL fans are created equal when it comes to the love and support they give to their teams, but this passionate work attests to the author going the extra mile to provide not only a profile of the Detroit Lions as a team, but as well as illustrating their impact as a popular but not exactly the most successful team in NFL history. Divided into 14 chapters that leave no stone unturned, the book begins with tracing the history of the Lions and how they evolved as a team since their establishment 91 years ago. It then culminates in a recent significant change in the team’s management that may well help the Lions develop a culture of winning and provide hope for their legions of supporters.
Being a fan of the Detroit Lions is a love-hate relationship. You keep watching and rooting for them, bearing a torch of hope. You hate them when they lose, but you cannot turn your back on them because you have already invested your time and emotion and you can’t get yourself to root for a different team. The relevance of Gary J. Evans’s work not only hinges on the fact that he has provided an in-depth look at what it’s like to be a football fan, but he gives a study on sports fanaticism as a behavior of enthusiasm.
