Amy Booker brings readers the exciting world of rock star touring in her romance novel So Close. Samantha has taken a job with a record label company to create a documentary of Indigo King. The new band is touring across the country, and Samantha gets to ride with them. Another big plus for her is her friend, Sarah, who is dating the lead singer, Ryan. The only person who is against the entire idea is Matt, the drummer, and he voices his opinion. The day before the tour starts, he collides with Samantha, breaking her glasses and wrist. Matt tries to make amends, and while both feel an immediate connection, neither of them will risk their feelings. How will they be able to tolerate each other on the tour? Why is Matt the only member who seems opposed to the documentary?
This is an unpredictable romance novel. Amy Booker created characters with distinct personalities I could relate to. Samantha reminds me of my tendency to overthink everything, which makes my imagination run wild. Matt is cold and closed off, which is something I have been guilty of as well. I liked the media involvement with the concerts, which adds to the realistic elements in the story. To add humor to the entire plot, Jude is a band member who makes running jokes to cheer everyone up. The transitions from Samantha’s perspective to Matt’s are easy to follow. Every character’s physical description adds to the imagery, but I liked the deep exploration of their personalities. When there is someone who is giving false information and jeopardizing the security of Indigo King, it surprised me to see I was wrong. The end of the story is unpredictable as well, which makes So Close the perfect romance story for readers who enjoy characters who are easy to connect with.
