Smorgasbord by Jagjiwan Sohal is an entertaining treat. When Anna Lopez is attacked by a hungry zombie, she retaliates by biting the creature. Her action triggers a new craze in culinary foods, and humans begin hunting supernatural creatures to eat. Goblin Nuggets, Merman Sushi and Ghoulash are popular foods. Zombie ranches are becoming more lucrative than cattle ranches. Julie, a vampire, rescues a zombie boy from ravenous human hunters, but she soon heads the menu of Joan, a trigger happy mom who enjoys hunting the supernatural for her barbeque parties. Julie doesn’t want to become grilled vampire steaks, and does her best to elude Joan and other humans who can’t wait to sink their teeth into her. Supernatural creatures dislike this new turn of events because they can’t hunt humans the way they used to.
I love a good barbecue, but found the creative meat selection in Smorgasbord a bit too rich for my taste. Jagjiwan Sohal has quite an imagination and uses it well to write this unique horror story with its great looking cover. Supernatural creatures are terrifying, but I sympathised with a few characters in this nicely developed plot. The story easily catches one's attention from the beginning and is slightly thought provoking. There are certain acts that humans do which are questionable and comparable to these creatures. Smorgasbord is a new twist on supernatural tales which I enjoyed, and I recommend it to sixth graders and older readers. They will appreciate the humour as much as I do.
