Author Biography

I was born in Leeds, in Yorkshire. I have lived in England, Papua New Guinea, and Perth, Western Australia. I have written three novels for children: Wickergate, Soulmare and Just After Midnight, The Moondial YA fantasy series, Dead Men Don’t Snore, and A Trembling of Finches thrillers in the Gordon Bennet stories. I also publish a weekly blog and podcast ‘Cup of Tea Tales’ that tells some of my life’s stories about growing up in the north of England during the 1950s and 1960s.

In Slipshod I wanted to write a mystery/thriller but with a modern twist. Set in the 1980s, two parallel stories run, one the story of the main protagonist, Slipshod, who takes a case that changes his life, and the second about the writer who is creating the story of Slipshod. The novel is a fast-paced mystery but it examines the challenges of the creative process. I would be interested in learning whether others follow a creative process.

Slipshod is a murder mystery by David M. Cameron. Peter McAdam was nicknamed Slipshod at school for his lack of enthusiasm and determination. Rupert Maddox interviews Peter to join his private investigation business, and after a few months, Peter becomes a partner. Rosemary, the daughter of Sir Reginald, hires Peter as her boyfriend for a weekend party. After Rosemary's mother's death, she fears her father, Sir Reginald, is being used. Peter must be Rosemary's eyes and ears during the weekend and look out for evidence of Mistress Kusoge's influence on her father. The clairvoyant Mistress Kusoge can contact the dead, and Sir Reginald is desperate to contact his dead wife. During the seance, strange and unexplainable things happen, and not long after, the first death occurs.

The plot in Slipshod is complicated and exciting. David M. Cameron took me on a rollercoaster ride of murder and intrigue. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and I could not put the book down. It was fast-paced and full of action. With all the twists and turns, I never knew what to expect next. The characters were brilliantly developed, unique, and authentic. The characters could be anyone I know, and I could relate to them. The story is exciting and well-written. Two different stories take place at the same time, and each has its events and drama. It was fascinating to alternate between the two stories. I did not expect a major twist at the end. Instead, it was a huge surprise and a fitting conclusion.

Peter McAdam (Slipshod) was approaching his office when he spotted an attractive woman waiting at the door. She looked out of place and drew glances from the men who passed by on the street. After confirming his identity, she introduced herself as Rosemary Potter. She informed Peter that her lawyer Miss Blomquist had recommended his services. She gave him an unusual assignment, far removed from his normal cases as a private investigator. Slipshod by David M. Cameron is a murder mystery novel that takes us through a series of murders following Slipshod’s encounter with Rosemary Potter. Will Peter accomplish his mission?

David M. Cameron narrates Slipshod from a multi-dimensional perspective, a unique writing style I have not encountered before. The first perspective is Slipshod’s, who describes events as they occur and gives us a first impression of each scene. The second is the omniscient narrator, a writer who develops the plot. At first, I thought this technique would drag out the storyline, but this was not the case. I enjoyed getting the writer’s perspective and his seemingly clueless notions about how the plot would unfold. The author has developed realistic characters with fallible traits and credible personalities. I empathized with Rosemary’s desire to protect her father from alleged manipulation by the Japanese Mistress Kusoge. All the chapters have titles, which aid the reader in transitioning to different perspectives.

David M. Cameron brings us Slipshod, a murder mystery story set in the United Kingdom. Peter McAdam, known as Slipshod since he was younger, is a private investigator. Aimlessly single again, going through life investigating missing dogs and unfaithful partners, Slipshod suddenly lands a new case. Lady Rosemary Potter wants him to act as her boyfriend for the weekend at Temple Heath House. She is worried that her father is being led astray by the new mystic. So Slipshod dives into a world only a few select are chosen for and finds himself in the middle of murder and mayhem. Will he be able to keep the Potters safe as intended? Will he find out who is behind the murders and why?

This one will keep you on your toes and the edge of your seat. David M. Cameron has created the perfect ensemble of characters in Slipshod. The protagonist is the most relatable character. Written mainly in the first-person narrative, we have insight into the main character’s inner thoughts and feelings. The scenery is described in such a fantastic way that you will feel transported to the open country. The flow and rhythm are set at an excellent pace to carry you along on the journey. You won’t want to put down this book until the very end. What made it so unique for me was the character of Daniel Romance. Recommended for anyone that enjoys a good murder mystery.
