Sky Chase by Lauren Massuda is the first book in the Flight of Ships series. Cordelia has made a name for herself as the feisty captain of a famous ship called The Raging Storm, which is tasked with keeping the floating islands of Caelum safe. Cordelia and her crew fight dangerous creatures like the Black Sting - as well as criminals - to keep those they love protected from harm. She has found her calling as a captain and balances her life with visits home to see her father and little brother. After becoming a captain, she stopped believing in wishes and lost that childhood belief that her brother still possesses. Cordelia's life takes a sharp turn when she's poisoned and must rely on the help of a doctor who has a history with her father. To find a cure, the crew of the Raging Storm embarks on a journey to find a creature that Cordelia believed did not exist. The world is magical and breathtaking with creatures such as flying giant manta rays and whales singing a melodic tune.
The journey to save her life creates an opportunity for Cordelia to look at the different aspects of herself, such as being a captain, daughter, and sister. Lauren Massuda incorporates a measure of innocence into the story, drawn from the children in Cordelia’s life. Their presence has an important role, as they provide a balance to her character. They explore the world through different eyes which bring to life a stunning world filled with imagination. Massuda also takes a deeper look at Cordelia through her brother's perspective, as he views life with childlike hope and belief, seeing her as his big sister - the hero. His belief is contrasted with her view that wishes are something for children. Massuda uses this as a poignant prelude to Cordelia's journey in which she will find herself believing in wishes once again while she seeks a cure. Sky Chase is a great read for all ages with a stunning setting, poignant characters, and rich storytelling that creates a wonderful adventure.
