Ted Carter is fresh out of college and ready to hit the world as a school teacher. It can’t be that difficult getting a teaching job; it’s as easy as teachers' jobs you watch on your favorite sitcom, right? Wrong! And after a few interviews, Ted Carter finds this out the hard way. But when Gretchen, of Gretchen’s Irish Pub suggests that he check out the sixth grade teacher position at Ted’s hometown school, he isn’t too thrilled about that particular position. But then he has no choice since his phone isn’t ringing off the hook about the other positions he’d applied for, so he decides to give them his resume. And you guessed it, the principal, Don Boggins hires him, and now he gets to work alongside some of his former teachers that he didn’t treat so well in the past.

Simmer Down, Mr. C is loosely based on the author, Scott Bitely’s story. With his teaching experience, he was able to incorporate his expertise and experience of teaching into the pages of his book. I was a substitute teacher for years, so I could relate to some of his stories that I thoroughly enjoyed. Bitely has a unique way of describing all of the difficulties a new teacher faces, and he does it in such a hilarious way he really makes reading his book enjoyable, fun, and entertaining. The entire experience Ted faces as a first year teacher, with the students, as well as his former teachers will keep you laughing for a long time. I loved reading Simmer Down, Mr. C and highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a good, humorous, entertaining book. If you are a teacher, Simmer Down, Mr. C is just what you need to read! You will truly not be disappointed with this really great book from Scott Bitely.

Simmer Down, Mr. C is a humorous account of a new teacher's first year, written by Scott Bitely. Ted was drawn to teaching because of the summer vacation teachers get but finds he just doesn't have the answers school administrators want to hear during employment interviews. He's ready to go back to working at Gretchen's Irish Pub when he hears about a vacancy at his old school. This doesn't sound at all appealing to Ted -- it means living at home with mom and dad and teaching side-by-side with some of the teachers who taught him. To add to the stress of the situation, school is going to start in about a week, and Ted doesn't have the first clue how to react to a fairly large class of sixth graders. His dreams of being the cool teacher all the kids love are abruptly shattered on the very first day of class.

Scott Bitely's Simmer Down, Mr. C will resonate with teachers, those preparing to teach, and anyone who's ever considered the profession and dreamed about those summers off. It's written in the first person, and I often forgot it was a work of fiction and not a memoir. Ted is a complex and socially awkward character who's incredibly shy around girls and totally unprepared to deal with the stresses and challenges facing him in the classroom. You have to feel sorry for the guy as he faces the increasingly hostile horde in the classroom and tries to cope with the strangeness of living at home. Ted slinks around town, nervous that he might encounter one of his students in the street and not sure how to cope with that. Simmer Down, Mr. C is an entertaining look at the dreaded first year of teaching that will make you wince at some of the blunders and feel good when things start to come together.
