Silent Siren by L.B. Carter is the first book in the Climatic Climacteric series. Rena has a secret. One she doesn't tell anyone. Not even her closest friends or her grandpa. One that haunts her every moment. Her father didn't drown due to the car accident that everyone says killed him. The only thing she can remember from the accident is the one horrific moment when she drowned him with a kiss of death. She was found washed up on the shore with no memory and no voice. She works every day so that the memory does not destroy her. Nor is new to the school, thanks to his first mission assignment that has him going undercover as a high school student in order to investigate a death. His job is to locate the specimen said to be what will help people adapt to climate change. The last thing he expects is to save a classmate and form an unexpected connection with her.
L.B. Carter breathes life into an engaging story that opens up conversations about the climate. Climate change and the environment both play an important role in the outcome of events as well as the setting. The setting takes place after the world has become overrun with water and the population has been forced to go inland. Climate also plays a primary role in the organization that Nor's parents work for which has the purpose of saving the environment. The tragedy of the car accident killing Rena's parents also occurred in the water and is the root of her PTSD. Each thread of the plot weaves around the importance of climate and the environment with a specific focus on water. The mystery is suspenseful with two sides of it linking together in an intriguing and surprising way as Nor investigates a murder while Rena struggles with terrifying truth about herself. The high school experience is seen through the eyes of two outsiders with the mannerisms and behaviors contrasting Nor's personality and Rena who doesn't fall in with the other students. Silent Siren delivers a riveting YA story woven with important topics, mystery, action-packed moments, and endearing characters.
