Shocking Confessions by Walter Marks is the seventh novel in his Detective Jericho series. Each book is more engaging and endears Detectives Jericho and Vangie to the reader. Neil Jericho is a veteran police officer that relies on experience and input from the rookie, Vangie. His motto to see justice through to the end almost gets Vangie kicked off the force when she takes on a case that should have been passed down to Animal Control. Detective Jericho is facing a possible serial killer and technology allows the mysterious criminal unlimited access to his targeted victims. While unraveling these two cases, Jericho is facing a personal decision that will affect his girlfriend, Rainbow, and Vangie has to come to terms with the history she would rather stay hidden, and learning to let go. Will Jericho find the killer before it contacts the next victim?
Walter Marks has found his niche with the Detective Jericho series. Shocking Confessions is a novel that pauses life as you enter Detective Jericho’s world. This novel has the perfect amount of conflict, suspense, and personal drama. The story quickly progresses as the killer identifies Jericho and avoids capture. Meanwhile, Vangie is a quick study as she learns the ropes around a higher rank. Justice isn’t always neat and pleasant; sometimes it is even counterproductive. I like Jericho’s skill and his insight to do the right thing, but Vangie adds a lot of excitement as she isn’t afraid to use her past to get results. Plus, she has a way of encouraging karma along. Overall, I found this is an excellent book to sink your teeth into, but reading the entire series is more satisfying.
