She Lies Beneath: A Chief Inspector Cam Fergus Mystery by Frances Powell is the story of a police inspector who is trying to find a killer on a murder spree while also trying to stay alive. Cam Fergus is a Chief Inspector and he absolutely hates autumn. While most people can’t wait for the season, for Cam autumn simply means death. So when a 999 call is received, claiming that they found a dead body at an archeological site, he knows that he is in for a ride that he doesn’t really want. To make matters worse, Cam soon realizes that he is not just investigating one murder but murders. They find that below the body is another body and it just doesn’t stop there. Cam really didn’t like autumn and now he has to stop a sadistic murderer before he claims any more victims. Does his team have what it takes to stop the killer before he gets any further?
I cannot get over how the author added dark humor to the story while still making it fresh and exceptionally well put together. I loved the narrative, the author’s style of writing and how she made everything come together so effortlessly. I adore Cam; he is tired, disgruntled, hates the weather and he does his job because he has to (basically me in every aspect, which makes me love him more and connect with him on a spiritual level). However, he is very serious about his job, he understands the gravity of the situation and he takes action accordingly. The plot was simply splendid and well-written, the author ensured that the reader had a full reading experience. To say that I loved this book would be an understatement.
