Author Biography

Author Kevin Cox has always been fascinated by the splendor of the universe and the mysteries it holds, using his imagination to fill in the vast unknown. Though he never planned to be a writer, he often had ideas for stories playing in his head. After deciding to write a single chapter to see if he could do it, he discovered a love for writing he never knew was there.

Much of his inspiration comes from growing up during the 80’s, reading and watching all the fantasy and science fiction stories he could find. Ideas come to him during long drives or while listening to music. He often listens to music while writing, especially songs that match the mood he is trying to capture.

He believes that a good story needs great characters that each have struggles and desire to find ways to overcome them. Kevin hopes that his readers will see their own struggles in these characters and are inspired to find their own strengths and always be learning and improving to be the best version of themselves. Connection with friends and willingness to help others are central themes in his writing.

Kevin lives in southwest Georgia in a small town called Leesburg. When he isn’t writing, he enjoys playing guitar and video games.

Shadowsphere: Bewilderness Book Two by Kevin Cox follows the adventure of Tavarian, a young boy cast out by his peers, whose ambition in life was to help his little town Rethia overcome its perilous state and maybe get the girl he desires in the process. Facing a steady decline in resources, a trial is held to determine who is best suited to venture down the mountain. When Tavarian is chosen, he sees it as his opportunity to prove himself. However, he will soon come to realize why those who have been chosen before him have never returned.

Shadowsphere by Kevin Cox has a really interesting concept that caught my attention from the outset. Having begun with Tavarian and his teenage battles of being an outcast and dealing with his crush on Lirah, we are slowly introduced to the happenings in his unique world. The characters each have struggles that they face which seem to stem from the larger issues flowing from the declining resources in the community. Throughout the story, we see how Tavarian goes through a series of challenges where he shows amazing growth as a character. This was one of the most appealing aspects for me as he starts as really immature but steadily grows mentally as the story progresses. Cox also does a fantastic job with the pacing and tone of the story which made it easy to get lost in the little world he created. I found the plot to be highly original and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Shadowsphere: Bewilderness Book Two is a young adult fantasy novel by Kevin Cox. It takes the reader into the intriguing world of Shadows, where all our fears and insecurities dwell and do the bidding of our minds. The main protagonist is Tavarian, a young boy who always felt out of place in his homeland Rethia, where he only had a few friends who could understand him. His aspirations to do something grand to gain the respect and attention of those around him came to life when he was chosen to be one of the Descenders, a group of people who are sent into the dangerous unknown to find the rokenstones, which were needed for the community of Rethia for survival. Leaving his crush Lirah and his family behind, Tavarian, together with a few more kids and including his nemesis Dexius, descend on a journey from which nobody has ever returned.

Kevin Cox's writing style provides amazing descriptions of the unknown world and everything in it to the smallest detail, portraying the exciting experiences that Tavarian and Dexius go through while searching for the rokenstones. During their journey, the boys undergo all sorts of different adventures, meeting interesting individuals who seem as lost as they are, such as Darby, a broken little girl, and Malidora, an opportunistic adventurer, whose mission is to save the world from the darkness that plagues them all. What I liked best about Shadowsphere were the wonderful messages and valid lessons about growing up and knowing oneself, pointing out that the journey of self-discovery is sometimes more important than the goals we're chasing. The descriptions of the action and the fights that Tavarian and his bunch of outcasts experience are described realistically. Details of the once beautiful world, now completely consumed by darkness, immerse the reader in the story, making this reading experience all the more exciting and fun.

The second book of Bewilderness is Shadowsphere by Kevin Cox. Being chosen as a Descender is a big honor for the people of Isodonia. Their current world’s atmosphere was toxic and food was carefully rationed by the government. However, as the population increases, the share given out to each family decreases to keep everyone fed. To avoid this slow descent into starvation and death, it is a Descender’s job to find lightning-filled stones called ‘rokenstones’ to help their struggling community. These energy-filled stones could power machines to produce more food and make life easier for people. However, there is a catch; no one has ever returned from the place that lies beneath the clouds at the bottom of the mountain. Tavarian is one of the recruits that could breathe the toxic atmosphere and he has been chosen to be one of the Descenders. Will he be the first of the Descenders to make it back home? Or will he become one of the many who do not return?

A thrilling, mysterious, unknown world awaits Tavarian after being chosen as one of the few Descenders in Shadowsphere by Kevin Cox! The first chapter starts with Tavarian and his friends looking down on the mysterious white blanket of the lower atmosphere. This sets an intriguing tone in the story. The deeper I got into the chapters, the more I understood the situation in Rethia, and the more hooked I was on the story! Tavarian is interested in carpentry, he has someone he likes, someone he doesn’t like, and a family that loves and teases him in turn. He is curious and interested in what lies in Rootcore but he never expected to be one of the few chosen to explore it! The mystery surrounding Rootcore left me flipping the pages right to the very end. I felt I was on the edge of my seat as Tavarian prepared for his journey below the mists. What is he going to find there? Will he come back? What happened to the Descenders before him? These questions constantly revolved in my head as I read. I was cheering for him the entire time, hoping he at least survived his ordeal. All in all, this is an exciting and enticing fantasy novel filled with twists and mysteries that kept me wanting more!
