Shadowsphere: Bewilderness Book Two by Kevin Cox follows the adventure of Tavarian, a young boy cast out by his peers, whose ambition in life was to help his little town Rethia overcome its perilous state and maybe get the girl he desires in the process. Facing a steady decline in resources, a trial is held to determine who is best suited to venture down the mountain. When Tavarian is chosen, he sees it as his opportunity to prove himself. However, he will soon come to realize why those who have been chosen before him have never returned.
Shadowsphere by Kevin Cox has a really interesting concept that caught my attention from the outset. Having begun with Tavarian and his teenage battles of being an outcast and dealing with his crush on Lirah, we are slowly introduced to the happenings in his unique world. The characters each have struggles that they face which seem to stem from the larger issues flowing from the declining resources in the community. Throughout the story, we see how Tavarian goes through a series of challenges where he shows amazing growth as a character. This was one of the most appealing aspects for me as he starts as really immature but steadily grows mentally as the story progresses. Cox also does a fantastic job with the pacing and tone of the story which made it easy to get lost in the little world he created. I found the plot to be highly original and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
