Shadow Bound by A.L. Scarborough is the first book in the Shadow Bound Chronicles. Sarah made a deal with Avarice to pay back the half-million she owes her within three months, but she was not allowed to raise the funds by gambling. Someone else made Sarah an offer: to pay off the debt in exchange for her retrieving an artifact that Avarice had been searching for. The object belonged to an elderly woman who was looking for a photographer so that her family would have something to remember her by when she passed away. In search of a particular camera, Sarah visited a pawn shop that catered to the supernatural. There, Sarah discovered a camera that flashed green but did not have a flash of its own, and the shutter button was not pushed.
Shadow Bound by A.L. Scarborough was a roller coaster of the supernatural, with action, demons, and betrayal. Fast-paced, it kept me on the edge of my seat until the end. The book was hard to put down, and I was turning the pages as fast as I could. I could feel myself right there with the characters, observing each scene as it was portrayed. The characters were well-developed and relatable. Sarah was intriguing; she seemed soft and vulnerable, and everyone around her liked to tell her she was stupid, but she was a strong woman and could hold her own. The story was masterfully crafted and a fascinating and easy read. The twists and turns had me guessing until the end. I enjoyed reading this book and cannot wait for the next one.
