Setting Boundaries for Women by Allison Bottke is a wonderful primer for Christian women who feel trapped by the interpretations of women's roles in the Bible. The author provides a program which she calls SANITY: a process of trying to establish boundaries for women who adhere to outdated roles of duty to home, family and community. The SANITY program consists of catching yourself in the act of negative behaviors and then, associating with positive and supportive people. These people should encourage you not to accept excuses, but rather to engage in positive actions which are in keeping within God's guidelines for appropriate behavior while still allowing for personal growth and reinforcement. Topics discussed are those common to women who continually do more than their share around the home and in the workplace. Situations in church life are addressed as they relate to personal reinforcement and being drained by being unable to say no to those who simply do not want to do the work themselves.
This is an easy book to read and the suggestions are both practical and totally workable. It is not a time-consuming and vigorous program; rather it is one which will feed upon itself once the initial insights are realized and put into practice. Although it is intended for Christian women, non-Christian women who find their days filled with the demands of others will also respond well to the noninvasive advice. This is one of those books that you'll want handy on your bookshelf for the next time you feel the pressure of unrealistic demands on your time and energy!
