Servant by J.S. Bailey is the first book in The Chronicles of Servitude series. Randy Bellison is an Exorcist (aka: a Servant) working under the guise of being the church handyman. After being shot by his predecessor, Graham Willard, Randy soon returns to his position, seeking out a replacement so he can spend more time with Lupe. Bobby Roland, having just been fired from his job, attends an interview after his roommate, Caleb Young, applies on Bobby’s behalf. Poltergeists make their presence known during the interview, after which Bobby has a premonition of Randy’s death and soon finds the source of the danger – a cut brake line on Randy’s car.

Back at home, Bobby discovers the poltergeists have set their sights on him. Returning to Randy’s house for help, Bobby hears screaming coming from inside and finds Randy in the basement with a dead girl. When Randy’s friend, Phil, arrives, Bobby returns home once more, climbs into bed and sleeps well, but the next morning, he discovers that Caleb has vanished. Inquiries reveal that Caleb Young had never existed. Scared and confused, Bobby meets with Randy and Phil at the Safe House, not realising that he is now in Graham Willard’s sights and is marked for death. Bobby needs to figure out who he can and cannot trust in order to survive.

J.S. Bailey has created a mystery/thriller with the perfect sprinkle of paranormal into the mix. With every answer supplied to Bobby, more and more questions arose. I was quickly unable to stop reading as I found that I needed answers too. Although Bobby has the gift of premonition, he is still a character who is easy to relate to, being so trusting and carefree, while the other characters are quite complex and take some time to tap into. Servant was an absolute delight to read and gives the perfect start to The Chronicles of Servitude. I will most definitely be seeking out many more books by this author.
