Kathleen Janz-Anderson continues Emily’s story in September Wind Book II: Passage to Emancipation. Emily waited for Shayne to appear, but he never showed up. When she entered The Palace, Ms. Bea told her that Shayne was no longer allowed there and was married with children. She also told Emily that she would still be required to be a prostitute on the nights that she was not dancing. Donald Schillings offered Emily a proposition that she couldn’t refuse. She was to be a nanny for his two children, Maria and Nathan. Emily noticed that Schillings paid little attention to his children. When she told him that the children would enjoy riding, he built a stable. Much to Emily’s dismay, Schillings hired Paul to teach the children to ride. Emily felt Paul was spying on her.
Kathleen Janz-Anderson connected Emily’s past to her current life with ease. Despite how vile Claude had been to her, Emily felt guilty for killing him. It was easy to understand why Emily wanted to leave The Palace. I thought her attachment to Maria and Nathan was endearing and assisted with their behavioral change. Several significant events built tension between Schilling and Emily. He restricted her ability to contact the outside world. The transitions from each day to the next made for an easy-to-follow timeline. The vivid detail given of Emily’s inner thoughts was flawless. I could understand her instinctual need to protect Maria and Nathan. The revelations as the story reached a climax were unexpected. I am eager to read the next edition of the series. Anyone who enjoys stories about young women facing genuine struggles would like September Wind II.
