Second Choices by June Wright is the moving story of an adoptee’s search for love and acceptance. It’s a story of betrayal and forgiveness. It’s a love story, but not a romance. Rather, it’s a story that shines a light on our misguided expectations and beliefs about love and shows us what real love is. I felt as though I was reading a memoir, so it didn’t surprise me to learn after I turned the last page that the story was inspired by true events. It touches on a host of real-world issues, from dealing with grief, verbal abuse, control, disloyalty, and eating disorders to suicide. Ultimately it’s a story of hope. It reassures us of the strength of the human spirit.
Reading Second Choices opened my eyes to a lot of things. It gave me a new perspective on adoption. It made me think about how guilt impacts behavior and relationships, often without us being conscious of what causes us to feel and act the way we do. I struggled to put this book down. It reduced me to tears. It sent my emotions spiraling as Elise walked out of the pages. As great women’s fiction should, it opened doors to new ways of thinking and a deeper understanding of how certain experiences impact people. If you are an adoptee, you absolutely should read Second Choices. If you are living with infidelity, read Second Choices. If you are a writer looking for examples of superb writing, read Second Choices. If you want to see how a memoir should be written, read Second Choices (even though it's not a memoir). If you love fantastic women’s fiction, read Second Choices. Anyone who enjoys reading the superb work of a talented writer should read this beautifully written story. I will look for more from June Wright. Second Choices is a must-read.
