Seafoam Green is a gorgeous collection of poetry by Hallie Herold. It explores the delicate interplay between happiness, pain, human existence, absence, and the shifting tides of life’s experiences. Herold's work evokes emotions through her elegant language and insightful observations about the human experience. The poet uses metaphors to speak about our humanity, employing compelling symbolism to communicate some intangible emotions and what it means to be human. About what defines our life, “Surely, we are defined by where we wash upon the shore. As our own beautiful seafoam.” This metaphor recurs throughout the book, exploring themes of belonging and the transient nature of joy and sorrow.
The poems “Awaken,” “Growing Pains,” and “Full Circle” are strong emotional anchors, guiding readers through personal journeys. In “Awaken,” Herold describes discovering a hidden power within: “Her power was not inherently good or evil… it could be either, both, or nothing at all.” This theme of duality—a common thread in human experience—resonates profoundly, and Hallie Herold communicates it with intelligence throughout the collection. “The Trees” captures a moment of empathy with nature, paralleling it with human struggles: “So completely powerless / Being blown about / Against their will.” Seafoam Green is a collection that invites readers to celebrate what they are — beautiful and flawed, suffering at times but in dignity. It examines our relationships with ourselves, with others, and with nature. The poet has the uncanny ability to allow imagery to instruct readers about the essence of life, drawing compelling parallels between human existence and nature. This collection is a beautiful offering for poetry fans, and I enjoyed the music in the language, the rhythmic verses, and the author’s gift for imagery.
