Scriptless is a work of non-fiction in the memoir, autobiographical writing, and slice-of-life subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Carol McMillan. This poignant and thought-provoking memoir takes its audience on a journey through a tumultuous period in American history. McMillan's memoir is a reflection on her coming of age in San Francisco during the late 1960s, a time of great social and political upheaval. The book follows the transformation of a sheltered suburban white girl as she immerses herself in the counterculture of the Summer of Love. Through vivid storytelling, McMillan paints a vivid picture of the era, complete with its music, its movements, and its challenges. Her journey doesn't stop in San Francisco; she takes readers on an entomology expedition across Africa, where she experiences a spiritual awakening that reshapes her worldview.

Author Carol McMillan grapples with the disillusionment of her own government and confronts the stark reality of racism, even within her own liberal family, which is a bold stance to take for such a raw and introspective work of memoir writing. What sets this memoir apart from so many others is its exploration of the author's personal growth in the midst of societal change, and it’s refreshing to see how change can and will happen when people are open to such reflectiveness. The narrative skill, description, and immersion made it feel like I was stepping into a time machine that transports you to an era of profound change and self-discovery. Overall, Scriptless is a compelling read for anyone interested in the transformative power of the 1960s counterculture and one individual's journey toward a deeper understanding of the world, and I would not hesitate to recommend it.
