Gia was hoping her move from New York to a small town in Florida would erase her past. She really hadn’t done anything bad in the big city, but her ex-husband was a scoundrel, one who cheated people out of their money and who had cheated on her. Gia’s plan was to open a small café in the town where her best friend, Savannah, lived. Only, the first day of her new life, though successful in the café, ended with a dead body in the dumpster out back. And not just any dead body, but that of her ex. She might be the prime suspect, only there are a number of extenuating circumstances that quickly lead the investigators on quite the wild chase, until another dead body turns up in the backyard of Gia’s new home, and someone has threatened Gia's life. Throw in a sparkle of romance and the murder mystery just gets all the sweeter. But, of course, there’s also the puppy, Thor. And who doesn’t love a good story with a cute puppy?
Lena Gregory’s cozy mystery novel, Scone Cold Killer (All-Day Breakfast Café Mystery Book 1), is everything the title suggests, except there are no scones, sadly. The protagonist is instantly likeable and the characters are all well developed to give the reader a firm appreciation of the plot’s cast. The plot develops rapidly with sufficient mystery and building tension to keep the reader actively interested and even feeling involved. The descriptive passages are well presented, just enough to give the reader a sense of place. This might be a comfort read mystery, but its compelling plot and interesting mosaic of characters keep the reader spellbound from start to finish. Looking forward to the next All-Day Breakfast Café mystery story.
