Scarlet Whispers is the first book in The Shades of Us trilogy by Abby Farnsworth. At seventeen, Anne Emerson couldn't possibly be happier. The war was over and she'd been reunited with her life love, Glen. Their lives ended, however, when a vampire killed Glen and turned Anne into one of his own kind. Anne's first act as a vampire was to stake the monster who'd killed Glen. The following seventy years were spent with Albert Jefferson - a vampire who loved her completely; however, Anne's heart had been captured by James Hamilton - a human. When James discovered Anne was a vampire, he was not afraid but wanted instead to become a vampire so he could spend eternity with her. She'd refused to stop his heart, but a local group of werewolves decided to end his life to punish the company Anne keeps, pushing her to a whole new level of scary.
I truly loved the story of Anne and James. Her love story from when she was human, right up to when she fell in love with a human so many years later, is truly magical. Abby Farnsworth presents a woman who truly knows the meaning of love, in life and beyond, and who gives herself totally when a man earns her love and trust so completely. I couldn't help but feel bad for her vampire companion who had fallen for her, as his silence led her to believe he was not interested in a serious relationship or a lifetime commitment. Anne put her whole heart at Albert's feet and bared her soul to him in order to save James' life. The tale of such devotion and promise was one that I will not soon forget, and I look forward to reading the remainder of the books in The Shades of Us trilogy. I recommend Scarlet Whispers to fans of true love, paranormal stories, and those over the age of 15 who believe that true love is worth everything.
