Saturn Conundrum by Dan Bishop is a science fiction novel about astronauts in space that presents a very realistic “what if” scenario. Rae Ann Chavez and two other astronauts are on a historic mission to be the first astronauts to set foot on Mars. On the way, they encounter a Chinese spacecraft that has its own plans of being the first to land on Mars. The presence of the second spacecraft causes problems for Rae Ann and her crew. One issue leads to another and eventually their mission is drastically altered. I won’t give away the details but one only needs to look at the title of the book to know that somehow the planet Saturn is involved. Suffice it to say, the crew of the spaceship Aurora will make history.
Saturn Conundrum is one of those rare science fiction novels that is so well-researched and grounded in real science that it feels like this scenario could really happen. Anyone who has paid attention to past and modern-day space exploration on television news or documentaries will easily see the way this story is extrapolated from those real-life accounts. It takes familiar images and thrusts them 13 years into the future, allowing the author to take a few scientific liberties that don’t seem all that far-fetched, to be honest. On top of that, Dan Bishop added just the right amount of danger to keep readers on the edge of their seats. The other thing that I loved about Saturn Conundrum was the way it humanizes the story through wonderful characters. Several of the astronauts are given rich, yet unique personalities. Rae Ann Chavez is described so brilliantly, inside and out, that I couldn’t help but feel connected to her and be deeply concerned for her as I followed her story. Saturn Conundrum is a beautifully crafted novel of hard science fiction about great characters that I highly recommend. I loved every bit of this story.
