Michael Drakich's Seven Realms series begins in Piaxia, where young warlock Tarlok, guard captain Savan, and merchant Tessia navigate the Brotherhood of Warlocks' power struggles after the monarchy's overthrow. A century on, a demonic threat reemerges, unsettling the seven kingdoms, with siblings Gar and Darlee battling for survival amidst the ensuing chaos. The plot then shifts to Riaz, where respected assassins, including Kero, ward of the assassin lord, Darlee, and Prince Brumaine, maneuver a volatile political landscape in Lymos to prevent a looming war. In book four, Sanctuary Has Fallen, the peaceful lives of Prince Brumaine, courier-soldier Zair, and healer's child Esca in Morica are disrupted by Brumaine's rebellion, foreign intervention, and demon threats, all while they grapple with their newly discovered forbidden magic.
I think the best part of following a series from its start, as I have done with Seven Realms, especially when the author is an indie warrior, is being able to witness their growth alongside the novels as the series progresses. I would not have continued beyond book one, The Brotherhood of Plaxia, if I did not absolutely believe in the work. Now at Sanctuary Has Fallen, four books deep, I can hand over my heart say that I am a Michael Drakich fan. The best part of this installment is the nuance Drakich injects into his many characters. The development happens organically and layer by layer we start to understand what makes them, and therefore the story, click. For example, we get a combination of suspenseful challenges, evolving characters, hidden agendas, and unexpected twists in scenes where all at once we understand Zair's precarious missions, witness Havor's shifting demeanor, and are drawn into secretive missives I feel constantly connected and constantly engaged, and put down book four fully satisfied. Very highly recommended.
