Samuel Stanley Scotty Snight is a children’s book written by Alison T. Broderick and illustrated by Mina Anguelova. Samuel Stanley Scotty Snight never brushed his teeth, irrespective of the fact that he would always tell his parents that he had done so. His breath was putrid and his teeth were quite yellow. The other students at school did not want to sit near Samuel or talk to him as his breath was so bad. One day, during a hearty lunch which typically included many sweets, Samuel’s tooth suddenly hurt him badly. After noticing a cavity, Samuel’s mother took him to the dentist, where the cavity was filled and Samuel’s teeth were properly cleaned. From that day on, Samuel always made sure to brush his teeth after every meal.
Penned in the style of a fable, Samuel Stanley Scotty Snight tells of a disaster which is just waiting to happen. Alison T. Broderick’s story of a young boy who lies to his parents, day and night, in order to avoid brushing his teeth is not only well told, but is beautifully illustrated from cover to cover. Samuel clearly did not understand why brushing your teeth was such an important thing to do, as it affects not only your own chompers, but also the noses of everyone around you. A stale breath is something that nobody should have to endure, yet everybody who sat near young Samuel would quickly search for somewhere far more pleasant to sit. The pain caused by the cavity finally showed Samuel the reason that it is vital to take care of dental hygiene every single day and night, and his bright white teeth were an added bonus. I quite enjoyed Samuel Stanley Scotty Snight and recommend it to be read by (or to) all young children aged 3-7, so that they learn at an early age that not brushing your teeth brings painful consequences.
