Samson: A Children’s Picture Book About Sibling Love is written and illustrated by Tevi Hirschhorn. Samson is a little boy who has an older sister named Liza. In the first half of the story, Liza is depicted as bossy and the one who gets everything she wants while Samson is frustrated at being too young for such freedoms. Instead, he faces early bedtimes, inadequate ice cream, being forced to eat broccoli, and getting into trouble. All he wants is to be the older sibling. But that changes in the second half of the story. Liza becomes the smiling big sister who plays with Samson, doesn’t make him eat something he doesn’t like, takes him places, fixes him hot chocolate with marshmallows, and is affectionate with him. Full-color illustrations add to the enjoyment of the book.
In Samson, Tevi Hirschhorn gives us a charming story of a child struggling with the differences in freedom and accountability between a young sibling and an older one. Parents with more than one child can easily sympathize with Samson’s frustration. Life can seem very unfair to a younger child who watches an older one seem to get away with anything. This picture book offers parents an opportunity to discuss the issue of sibling relationships with their children in a loving and humorous context. For just as the younger child can see that there are benefits to having an older sister or brother, so can the older child see how his or her behavior can make things easier on a sibling.
