Salamander Six by Michael DiBaggio is a short adventure story. St Martin is a beautiful island in the French Caribbean, the Caribbean in the Ascension Epoch universe, that is. The Colonial Administration has fallen, after seventy years of corrupt, dominating rule. And now, when the Administration is trying to escape, a fire breaks out, trapping some of the incumbents inside. Florian Archambeault owns Marin-Pyronef, a revolutionary firefighting company, and he has spent years trying to prove that his system, using drones to put out a fire before the fire engines even get moving, really does work. His jump crafts are able to get men on the roofs of buildings so tall that no ladder can reach them. His is the only company that can put out this fire. But Florian is caught up in a moral dilemma – one of the trapped people is Pascal Beaulieu, the Colonial Commissioner, a man who ruined Florian and exiled him twenty years earlier. Will Florian save the day or will he let revenge stand in his way?
Salamander Six by Michael DiBaggio is a standalone story and a good read at that. For such a short story, there was an awful lot packed into it, action from the word go. The plot is brilliantly written, with very clever dialogue, and is very tight. There are no loose ends at all, everything tied together very neatly. The characters were incredibly well developed for a short story as well, and the whole plot clipped along at a good pace. The ending was spot on and the book just made me want to read more. Maybe this could be developed into a longer story? There are no downsides to the book at all; the formatting, the plot, the characters, everything was flawless. The appendix at the back was very useful too, and helped a lot with explaining things. Excellent story, and I will be looking out for more books from Mr. DiBaggio.
