Ruth: Mother of Kings by Diana Wallis Taylor is a beautifully conceived and rendered recitation of what the life of the Biblical character Ruth might have been like. Taylor has taken the Book of Ruth from the Old Testament, and “filled in the blanks”, so to speak, with day-to-day life details from that period in history. The resulting story is heart-warming and filled with anxious moments of concern for the characters therein. Beginning when Ruth is a mere toddler, the tale takes us through the tragic death of her parents, her subsequent relocation to her grandparents’ farm, her formative years, marriage, death, another long relocation, another marriage, until it ends at just the right place in time. Throughout the tale, the reader accompanies Ruth on her journey through life. It is not at all hard to imagine this fictional life being cobbled together with bits and pieces of numerous real life situations, which adds great believability to the book.
Ruth: Mother of Kings, along with several other books by Diana Wallis Taylor, is ideal for helping folks to better understand life at a time before indoor plumbing, electricity, computers, cell phones or even e-readers… or books, for that matter! The graphic descriptions are so real you will smell the hot, dry desert dust, feel the midday sun beating down on your head, and taste that cold drink of water at the end of a day in the field. The author’s vast knowledge of so many believable details of that time in history provides the reader with more than just entertainment. Hidden in the pages is much educational value, as well. Ruth: Mother of Kings by Diana Wallis Taylor is an outstanding story, suitable for all ages and all faiths. I would very favorably recommend this book to anyone, after it undergoes a final edit. It’s a fascinating story.
