Steve Peak’s Running with Chickens is a humorous and entertaining read of one man’s journey of leaving his 20’s and awakening one day to the responsibilities of adulthood. Peak defines the stages of transitioning from one’s 20’s to their 30’s that all millennials can relate to and in which most likely see themselves. And with his sudden realizations, Peak, together with a business partner, relocates from Silicon Valley to Costa Rica to establish a farm with little more than faith. But before he makes this move, we get insight into the difficult family dynamics that formed Steve’s thinking as a young adult, his struggle with Attention Deficit Disorder, and his nonconformist theories of what life is about. Peak’s story illustrates what can be accomplished when one is determined or maybe even desperate.
Running with Chickens by Steve Peak is a must-read for all millennials. The essays are written with a clever randomness of experiences that all young adults face but are scared to conquer. Peak brings meaning to all those anxiety-provoking decisions everyone must make as we move from being dependent on our parents to becoming independent. Readers will come away with a plethora of new favorite philosophical sayings and social media hashtags – “adaptation is the new sim card.” The most touching part of this story was how in the human condition, when your measure of success is obtained, resources should be shared with your neighbors. Do yourself a favor and get lost in this book. It will not disappoint.
