It was odd that Aleksi was born with a Rune embedded in his right palm. Many feared him for this because it has not happened in ages on Terra. Now a young teen, Aleksi's Rune is waking up from its slumber and it is beginning to extend its metallic tendrils into his nervous system. Without the guidance of a Master, the Rune would reach his brain too fast and would kill him. With nothing but a cryptic letter from his missing Master, Aleksi sets out into the dangerous world pursued by his enemy's assassins and by the Enforcers of his own Academy which he has abandoned. But the biggest challenge the youth faces is controlling his anger so as to slow down his Rune's progression until he finds his Master.
The world that Jamison Stone built is remarkable through the harmonious entwining of magic and technology. I've long been searching for a realm this satisfying. The narration is smooth and the descriptions complete the personality of each place and race of people. Characters are well crafted and they are one with the lands from which they come, thus creating a striking contrast when people from the different races of Terra come together. Fighting techniques are well described, making it easy to visualize the scenes. I enjoyed Rune of the Apprentice and I look forward to reading the sequels. I find this novel best appropriate for young adults due to its coming of age storyline, but also because of mildly violent and sexual content.
