Rocket Red: A Little Ant with a Big Dream, by Cheryl DaVeiga and Dave Gibson, is a 37-page-long children’s illustrated book about Rocket Red, a small ant with a passion for music like Miguel in the movie Coco. And along those lines, his family member Queenie tries to squash his dreams and make him see sense, like how important it is to help the ant family work to provide food for themselves so they won’t starve. But on his way to help the other ants, he meets a human, Mr. Big and Mean, who almost steps on him. But as Red pulls out his guitar and starts to play, Mr. Big and Mean hears something and decides to investigate further. Will Red be able to save himself and help his family through his music? At the end of the book are several facts about insects, and who inspired the book.
I found this to be a cute and charming story, filled with colorful pictures where young readers can pick out the word “ant” out of much longer words. It has a positive and fun message, and it balances out the needs of the family with those of the individual. I especially liked how the other family members come together in times of crisis to help Rocket solve his problem. Rocket Red: A Little Ant with a Big Dream, by Cheryl DaVeiga and Dave Gibson, is a story that young readers will enjoy time and time again. Highly recommended.
