Rock On: Mining for Joy in the Deep River of Sibling Grief by Susan E Casey is a beautifully written non-fiction book that circles around grief and finding happiness in its midst. The story unravels in a middle-class home where a strong bond is formed between Susan and her brother Brian, one that goes beyond the grave. As they go about the business of living and loving, life, with all its ups and downs, seems to be fine. But when Brian and his family unexpectedly die in a car crash in Hong Kong, she makes a journey to Asia and subsequently around the world on an emotional roller coaster of unimaginable grief, and eventually makes sense of it all.
Susan E. Casey's Rock On: Mining for Joy in the Deep River of Sibling Grief is a story of love, death in the family, grief, hope, and one woman's journey to find the meaning of it all. I especially love how the story develops, effectively showing how the special sibling bond is formed and nurtured in a way that is very realistic and easy to relate to. The author's vivid description of the events that follow is objective, coherent, and concise in such a way that the story flows like a river - smooth, determined, and persistently going in one direction. And while we swim with the story's narrator in a river of sorrow, a positive message drifts, multiplies, and goes with the flow, turning it into a story of love so deep so that it becomes a celebration of life itself.
