Wendy Schultz's River of Light is an enchanting coming-of-age story about a girl who struggles with her identity and strives to live a healthy, normal life despite her disappointing family issues. In the early part of the story, Clare is happy to stay with Grammie since she hopes to live in a stable home instead of moving every year like she is accustomed to—which is not a very comfortable life for a child. At an older stage in her life, she is forced to deal with her struggle in accepting a father who deserted his family and played a role in an unborn child's survival. Also, she discovers there's more to reality than meets the eye as she finds out about her gift and communicates with babies. Is normal life a far-fetched dream for Clare?
The smooth blend of realistic and natural experiences with magical themes is nothing short of amazing. Clare's struggle with her father's flaws and her concern for her brother's well-being are effectively communicated in a highly expressive and engrossing manner. Additionally, the theme of magic is creatively explored, offering mysterious encounters with internal voices and otherworldly characters. I found this aspect of the book quite thrilling. Also, the book contains some interesting themes that reflect family life and growing into adulthood, including education, family issues, friendship, identity, parenthood, forgiveness, empathy, etc. Ultimately, River of Light is a sensational, magical tale that merges some harsh truths with the small beautiful gifts of life. As you read Wendy Schultz's immersive tale, you will find yourself laughing, celebrating amazing discoveries, and empathizing with the characters as if you were with them in person.
