Intense and intoxicating, Rising Vengeance by Stephen J. Trolly is described as epic fantasy for young adult readers, but it most certainly is a delightful read for all fans of epic fantasy, a story with a powerful setting, great themes, and a conflict that is phenomenal. The Morschen of Anaria is composed of many nations, with great and proud beginnings, and although they do fight against each other from time to time, they always find a way to return to peace. But now, an ancient enemy is rising and he has only one objective: take back what he couldn’t thousands of years ago. Can anyone stop him this time? Can the people withstand the wrath and fury and destruction that Torridesta’s Ringlords of Shadow and Darkness are about to unleash?
Rising Vengeance is a riveting epic fantasy that immediately plunges the reader into the intensity of breathtaking action, leaving them no moment of rest until they reach the satisfying denouement. The setting comes across beautifully through the story, captured in excellent prose and vivid descriptions. Stephen J. Trolly’s prose is highly descriptive and it is laced with exciting images and scenes, and great dialogues. From the very beginning of the story, the reader gets a taste of the author’s strong storytelling skills: “The metallic smell of blood was overwhelming. The dull crash of steel striking wooden and steel shields and ringing off of enemy swords was loud enough to all but drown out other noise. The twanging of bowstrings could just be heard at the edge of the city as the defending archers desperately tried to hold what remained of the walls from an army that more than ten times outnumbered the meager forces still inside of the city.” I was absorbed from the beginning of the story and read continuously throughout the night. I enjoyed the well-imagined plot, the strong conflict, and the fast-paced, gripping narrative.
