Caregivers of those fighting terminal illnesses go through a lot and almost always stay behind the scenes. As practice shows, it is especially hard for men. Silent heroes, they don't ask for praise for their self-sacrifices. Ride or Die by Jarie Bolander is a story of unconditional and selfless love in the face of insecurity, grief, and adversity. Jarie's beautiful wife, Jane, was diagnosed with leukemia shortly after they got married. Jane was just thirty-five; she ran a successful publicity firm of her creation and loved life to its fullness. Cancer wards, chemotherapy, and almost sleepless nights in the hospital replaced grandiose events for Jane's famous clients. But Jarie was always by her side.
Ride or Die is an emotional read in which Jarie Bolander opens his heart to us. He also gives us many practical recommendations about what to do in dire situations concerning healthcare and sets an example of handling them properly. Jarie explains the significance of the Care Circle, which unites people supporting a person battling cancer. This thoughtful author encourages fellow male caregivers to accept help when necessary, no matter how hard it may be for them. He describes in detail the peculiarities of leukemia treatment in an easy-to-understand way. The book draws attention to the difficulties faced by minorities, like Asian Americans, in finding a donor for a bone marrow transplant and offers some solutions. I appreciated Jarie's appealing writing style with occasional self-irony and the grains of wisdom he shares. Ride or Die is a very compelling book, and I highly recommend it to fans of memoirs and motivational nonfiction and those who help their loved ones fight a terminal disease.
