Rewind Ranch by Peggi Davis begins in Birmingham, Alabama, where four affluent friends seek rejuvenation at Maui's exclusive Rewind Ranch, undergoing transformative surgeries and makeovers. Margot, Elli, Mary Grace, and Lacey Ann each have their own personal reasons that lure them into the resort's promises. In the background, at the Aloha Medical Center, the center's secrets start to reveal themselves, including a clandestine meeting discussing 'global requests' and a peculiar Eternity House. Driven by a cryptic note from the deceased, the group investigates anomalies and uncovers unsettling practices. One doctor's connection with a pathologist propels them to find out the horrifying truth behind the resort's glossy facade, and the four friends find themselves in a deadly situation where more than just the signs of aging can be taken away.
Peggi Davis took me in a direction that I was definitely not expecting in Rewind Ranch, and it got really heavy pretty fast. Davis did an excellent job in wrapping up some deeply seated themes in this thriller that pushed beyond the boundaries of it simply being a straightforward story. These include the societal expectations of beauty, the consequences of unchecked privilege, and the ethical implications of extreme medical advancements. The writing is clean and easy to become immersed in, particularly as Davis describes the stunning landscapes of Hawaii with a serenity to the environment that stands in stark contrast to the intense situation the group finds themselves in. “The sea sparkled like diamonds, stretching ahead like shiny satin as far as the eye could see." Overall, this is a well-written, engrossing, and wonderfully entertaining book that I have no doubt lovers of contemporary thrills with a nod to chick-lit will love.
