I like Daedrin, the protagonist of Retribution, the first book of the Redemptive Chronicles. There is a scene in the first chapter where his father basically tells him he will disown him if he joins his friend, Skane, and his girlfriend, Marin, in a quest for adventure. Daedrin is a good, hard working son, but he is also a good friend, and he loves his girlfriend. He does not hesitate to run from the house. He does not hesitate to turn his back on a father who has turned his back on him. Young men have had to have this attitude in order to accomplish something new since the first human societies. Daedrin is a hero and D.M.
Kurtz captures his spirit perfectly.
Besides having a perfectly good hero, Retribution by D.M. Kurtz has some other great aspects going for it. The Redemptive Chronicles will be fantasy on an epic scale and Retribution sets the tale up nicely. The writing is good and the plot is revealed in a timely manner that keeps propelling the story forward. There is great use of foreshadowing, which I like a lot, especially in an epic tale. D.M. Kurtz has a talent for adding just enough foreshadowing to the story without being obvious. The mystical creatures are realistically frightening, and the sense of adventure is balanced with a good sense of danger. All the elements of good fantasy are present in Retribution; magic, mind control, politics, and greed for power. Throw in a few dragons and you have a great book with all the makings of a fantasy classic.
