Résumé Essentials: Do’s, Don’ts & It Depends - With Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and LinkedIn Updates by Neil O'Donnell is a short “how-to” book on the art of résumé writing. Résumé Essentials is essentially a book that describes what are the common pitfalls one encounters in résumés, what hiring managers typically look for on paper when they first receive a résumé, the importance of proofreading and error-free copy, as well as the basics of formatting such as font, spacing, style and the content that is required. The book focuses on the importance of a LinkedIn profile, as well as the applicant tracking systems that are widely used. The latter half of the book contains several résumé samples for various job descriptions that provide examples of how each résumé should be individualized according to the background, experience, and job profile.
Although there are hundreds of résumé writing books available, I thought Résumé Essentials: Do’s, Don’ts & It Depends was still a useful read. The fact that it is quite brief actually makes it easier to parse through the information quickly and easily. All of the main points involved in résumé writing are covered and I especially liked how Neil O'Donnell has provided several samples of résumés, each with different style and content, to give an idea of the variety of résumés that can be created and customized. The book moves through each chapter quickly after covering the main points. Overall, I think this could be a useful book for job seekers in any field.
