Resilient by Katherine Turner recounts the life of a woman named Katherine. Katherine's parents struggled with addiction and mental health issues, which led to neglect and abuse in her childhood. On her last day of first grade, Katherine's parents' unhappy relationship reached a boiling point, and her family's situation only worsened as they fell deeper into poverty. With her mother struggling with alcoholism, her father absent, and her older brothers already in foster care, Katherine took on the responsibility of caring for her younger sister, despite being just a child herself. Social services later intervened, and Katherine and her sister were placed in foster care in the countryside. While her new home provided a stable and caring environment, Katherine's struggles continued into adulthood. She battled loneliness and made tough choices while grappling with her past, turning to addiction and self-harm to cope as she realized she was on the path to a future that uncomfortable resembled that of her biological parents.

Despite her difficult upbringing and challenges in adulthood, Katherine's story is one of remarkable resilience. Katherine Turner's writing vividly portrays the traumatic events of Katherine's life while also highlighting her strength and perseverance. Katherine's willingness to share her story is a testament to her bravery, and Turner's sensitive and skillful handling of the material makes Resilient an inspiring read. Through Katherine's experiences, readers gain insight into the long-term effects of childhood trauma and the complex nature of addiction and mental illness. As someone who personally knows another who grew up under similar circumstances, this was a particularly emotional roller coaster for me to read. Still, Turner's message of hope and resilience shines through in Katherine's journey, offering readers a glimpse into the power of human endurance. Resilient is a powerful and moving tribute to one woman's resilience in the face of adversity and a valuable reminder that no matter how difficult our circumstances are, we all have the capacity to overcome and thrive.
