Rescued: A Tale of Two Dogs by Birgit Stubblefield and Debra Wagner tells the story of two women and their experiences raising dogs they rescued. Birgit Stubblefield tells the story of Harper, a Pyrenees/Lab mix. Harper became a part of Birgit's family at 10 weeks old. For the first couple of months, Harper needed to potty every ten minutes or so and had numerous "accidents." He didn't cuddle with Birgit. Instead, he bit her hands and challenged her authority. She scoured the internet and found useful information to deal with these issues. Dog obedience classes provided Harper with the structure he needed to calm down. Eventually, Birgit intends for Harper to be a therapy dog. Debra Wagner tells the story of Cricket, a Yorkshire Terrier who had spent the first 3 years of her life in a puppy mill. Puppy mill rescues need special treatment in order to adapt. No crates or cages can be used. A harness should be used instead of a leash. Cricket was afraid of strange, unfamiliar sounds and wasn't housebroken. Debra learned Cricket needed to unlearn all her old behaviors and be taught how to be a dog.
Rescued: A Tale of Two Dogs by Birgit Stubblefield and Debra Wagner is an uplifting story of the realities of adopting rescued dogs. The trials and tribulations involved in making these dogs part of the family are discussed in detail. No sugar-coating is added. The happiness they bring into their owners' lives is apparent. Both authors state the most important requirement to help rescues adapt to their new environment is patience. The dogs in the story are as different as can be, but they both have an endless supply of love to give. Rescued is well-written and was a joy to read.
