Requiem by P.L. Parker is a futuristic spectacle that blends space opera and eroticism. It opens with an intense scene where Camilla Shaw, a member of a covert operations team, is part of a mission to steal the prototype of a new category of weaponry designed by the Deg’Nara. Impossible to detect until deployed, this weapon creates destruction on an apocalyptic scale that rivals Darth Vader’s Death Star. The rebellion needs the prototype as they are close to losing in the intergalactic war. Otherwise, they will be hunted down to extinction. Just as everything is going as planned, the space pirate Ashyr upsets the mission by snatching the prototype for himself. As Camilla is taken prisoner, she catches Ashyr’s interest. The silver-eyed pirate tries to get a clearer picture of who and what she is. Camilla is determined to retrieve the prototype at whatever cost, but she also runs the risk of capitulating to Ashyr’s charms.
Requiem includes topical themes common in most science fiction novels that deal with intergalactic war, but it is still tempting and engaging enough to lure you into reading because of its romantic and erotic elements. Expect Camilla and Ashyr to trade barbs while she is his prisoner because this is how P.L. Parker explores their chemistry. As Ashyr critiques Camilla and her team’s probability of winning the ongoing war, and since he has possession of the weapon, it gives him an advantage over Camilla to decide what course of action to take. Much of what happens in the process from here might sound predictable, but Parker gives you something quite the contrary. You may well guess what happens between Camilla and Ashyr, but how they are going to deal with an enemy with a powerful weapon at their disposal is something that you can look forward to reading.
