Requiem: A Neil Baggio Suspense by Charles D'Amico is a fascinating thriller for readers who enjoy sleuth and mystery novels. When the narrative opens, Neil Baggio and Fr. Roberts are driving from Detroit to Santa Fe, New Mexico, hoping that Maria flies in to join them. The trip to Santa Fe is designed to give Neil and Maria a break from work and time to relax and recharge. But Maria gets herself deeply embroiled with the Gaines Chemical case. A dangerous drug is being released onto the market and Neil must hunt down the drug lords behind it. Maria’s involvement has made her a vulnerable target and Neil must fight to save her. Follow him as he races across the country and the world, chasing the bad guys. But a ruthless and skilled enemy is determined to disrupt his path and even take him out. Can he survive long enough to save Maria?
Requiem is a well-written thriller that bears Charles D'Amico’s unique writing signature, his exceptional storytelling skills, and his gift for character. I loved the way the author develops the relationship between Neil and Fr. Roberts, and Neil and Cappelano — tracing their links with Gaines from the first time they met in Milan. The backstory is skillfully written into the narrative in a way that doesn’t distract readers. Maria plays a powerful role in enhancing the conflict and the author handles this character in a deft manner. The descriptions are terrific and I loved the details of Neil’s experience of travel, the emotions and thoughts of the characters and their inner worlds. The tension is strong and it grows from page to page as the conflict escalates. Requiem: A Neil Baggio Suspense is an enthralling read with memorable characters, featuring strong writing and a confident narrative voice.
