Remeon’s Destiny is an exciting work of sci-fi and fantasy fiction aimed at young adults, written by J. W. Garrett. Forming the first book in the Realms of Chaos Series, the plot focuses on farm boy Thomas in the year 1947, who dreams of a wild, exciting life very far from his own. But Thomas’s dreams turn into nightmares when he finds himself thrown into the middle of the war on Planet Remeon, where telepathic weapons, disease and thought control threaten the very existence of the planet itself. As he struggles with family issues and newfound chaos off-planet, Thomas learns much about human nature and how to progress from boy to man.
I love it when a young adult book manages to encompass a fully rounded coming of age story amid its exciting plot, and that’s exactly what author J. W. Garrett achieves here. Thomas is, despite the semi-historical setting, a very relatable young man seeking a different life to the one that his parents have chosen for him, and his need for escape really leaps off the pages. The interpersonal drama between him and his father is already compelling; then the plot takes another giant leap as we find ourselves on Remeon. Clever plot twists and immersive, atmospheric descriptions will keep readers of all ages hooked as we discover the different tribes battling it out for supremacy and survival, and their otherworldly weapons which both frighten and intrigue. Overall, Remeon’s Destiny is an excellent page-turner for fantasy and science fiction fans everywhere.
