Remains is an excellent crime novel by Vicki M. Stewart. The Holden Museum promoted Kayden Wesley as an emerging artist. When the board decided that they would no longer look after Kayden financially, he had to generate income to support himself. Detective Greyson Wilder is friendly with a homeless man, and when he reports that his friends are missing, she decides to investigate. Greyson fortuitously discovers clues that lead to human remains. With the help of her friend the Chief Medical Examiner, they identify a suspect who closely resembles Kayden. They need to track down this new artist named Phoenix, but in the meantime, Kayden remains the prime suspect. Greyson must figure out the relationship between the two artists to find her killer. Time is running out for homeless people.
Vicki M. Stewart planned and executed a brilliant plot with Remains. She kept me on the edge of my seat with her writing style. I was guessing the whole time but could never predict who the killer was. It was a major twist in the story that I did not see coming. The story was fast-paced and action-packed. It was a page-turner that kept me up through the night. I could not put it down, not even for a minute. I had to know who the killer was. The characters were excellently developed and authentic. They could have been any of my friends. The friendship between Greyson and her friend is unusual. The book is well-written and impressive, while the unexpected twist at the end was a shocker.
