Rejoining Kin by M.K. Baker chronicles the journey of the Wise Assembly of Haven, who set off to find their respective Kin as winter concludes. Baker's cast includes diverse characters such as Elkor, Tildra, Dehmun, Endi, Akro, and Ryjus, each confronting their own hopes, trials, and stories. Notable events include Vetronom's venture into the desert, the meeting of Perl and others with Sulari Leed who offers guidance to their Kin's haven, Mur, and the discoveries made in Enosin. The story also illustrates the personal journey of Perl, who learns about the impending Blue Eye cataclysm and her significant role related to the Bodhi project. Other characters' stories include Alban, Tyto's love story with Triksy, Tildra's capture, and Borak's challenging experiences in a strength-ruled society.
Rejoining Kin by M.K. Baker is the second novel in the Trip series, which was preceded by book one, Gathering Wise. The novel is pretty complex and while it does read as a stand-alone for patient readers, this is definitely one of those books where the character-driven intertwined plots are critical to the arcs. The world-building is really well done and it is evident that constructing settings is one of Baker's greatest literary strengths. There is one particular scene in Myselia where a massive gathering of predators has disrupted the local ecosystem. The description of Myselia, with its remnants of a fire, new vegetation, and the presence of various colored caps, is almost cinematic. An additional element of mystery is layered in with the presence of Akro, a Wise Skamata, and the ethereal presence of Ohm. Overall, this is an intentionally slow-burn novel that continues to build as Baker pushes forward, with gorgeous illustrations and an explosive climax that will come as a shock to many. Recommended.
