It’s fascinating to find a book that serves two very different purposes. Regina and Renita Tackle Nasty Nate's Nasty Ways! is a beautifully illustrated book for children in Grades K-5 that deals with the all-important issue of bullying. But it is also a very clever marketing tool for the authors, Renita and Regina Deloatch, who are co-hosts of the popular Youth Sports TV show, TwinSports TV.

Regina and Renita, the primary characters in this well-presented children’s book, are twins. So are the authors, and if you haven’t already guessed it, Regina and Renita Tackle Nasty Nate's Nasty Ways! is based on their own childhood experiences, in this case with bullying. The twins are identical except that Renita has a scar on one side of her face. At school, Nasty Nate picks on Renita constantly and in very hurtful ways. He needs to be taught a lesson, but who will teach him? Will it be Regina springing to her sister’s defence? Or will it be Renita’s classmates who think enough is enough? Or will it be the twins’ parents and/or teachers? Finding out who tackles nasty Nate’s nasty ways, and how, is one of the most refreshing aspects of this children’s book: you see, the authors leave it up to readers to decide by offering them three possible endings. What a great way to generate classroom discussion on a social issue so relevant to so many students.

Regina and Renita Tackle Nasty Nate's Nasty Ways! is told through poetry, a popular approach in children’s books. As poetry, sometimes it flows nicely; at other times the rhythm is broken for the sake of rhyme by longer sentences. Fortunately, children will possibly be more caught up in the illustrations and the story itself to notice. At the end of Regina and Renita Tackle Nasty Nate's Nasty Ways! the authors have included some coloring and connect the dots exercises which, along with letting readers decide the endings, the illustrations, the topic and the poetry, makes this book one to get for your child or your school. And do make sure you visit Renita and Regina’s awesome website at www.twinsportstv.com.

Regina and Renita Tackle Nasty Nate's Nasty Ways! is a social issues storybook for children, grades K-3 written by Renita Deloatch and Regina Deloatch, with Donna Buie, and illustrated by Sharaye Smith. Regina and Renita are sisters who are also the best of friends, but they’re even a bit more than that -- they’re identical twins. The two girls look exactly the same, except Renita has a birthmark on the side of her face. Renita wishes it weren’t there; she wishes she weren’t different, which is exactly how her birthmark makes her feel. Some kids at school are curious about the mark and ask her questions like how she got it, but Regina says Renita should just ignore all the staring and curiosity. Nasty Nate is a different story, however; he’s a bully who enjoys tormenting other kids, and he’s decided to torment Renita. He calls her Scarface, kicks her assignments down the hallway floors and seems determined to make Renita’s life miserable. What should the twins do about him? They’re at the bus stop waiting to go to school, and Nate starts up again. What’s the right thing to do?

Regina and Renita Tackle Nasty Nate's Nasty Ways! addresses the problem of bullying in schools and the problems children, who may be considered different, often face. Kids often want to be just like everyone else, and being singled out by a bully on the basis of some difference can make it even harder for a kid to adjust and feel comfortable in school and with their peers. This story particularly resonated with me as my father has a fairly prominent facial birthmark, and reading of Renita’s plight had me wondering what his experiences as a young boy were like. The Deloatchs have designed this story to be an interactive one with three different endings offered, as well as a number of activity pages featuring puzzles, coloring pages and connect-the-dots drawings. There is also a glossary of terms and thought-provoking questions about bullying and how to address the problem. Sharaye Smith’s illustrations are marvelous! They’re brightly colored and work quite well with the story to bring the characters and the action to life. Regina and Renita Tackle Nasty Nate's Nasty Ways! is most highly recommended.

Regina and Renita Tackle Nasty Nate’s Nasty Ways! is a fun book that should inspire kids to make good choices. Readers are in for a treat—there are three different endings! Which ending do you prefer? Which ending would your school prefer? Authors Regina and Renita Deloatch, who happen to be the stars of the book, tell a story in rhyming form based on a real-life event. Nasty Nate is a bully who makes fun of Renita who was born with a birthmark on her face. At first, she ignores his remarks, but when this continues, she tells her mom. Then, they tell the principal. This book encourages children to think about the effects of the bullying and offers suggestions on how to deal with bullies.

The simple, cartoon-style illustrations by Sharaye Smith are bold with stylish big feet and a much larger head. Readers of Regina and Renita Tackle Nasty Nate’s Nasty Ways! are in for a second treat, too! A word search, coloring page, and a connect the dots picture by counting by 5’s. The activity pages at the back of the book will help teachers discuss bullying and how to handle it. Parents will like reading this book with their children and they can discuss which ending they prefer. The three different book endings offer three different scenarios on how to handle a bully and open discussion amongst classmates and family members. This book also includes a glossary of terms used in the story. I highly recommend this book for schools, libraries, and homes, and believe that readers are definitely getting their money’s worth with all the included bonuses.

Authors Renita Deloatch and Regina Deloatch, who also appear as co-hosts of the popular TV show Twin Sports TV, help children better understand troublesome areas of their lives by tackling tough subjects in their book. It is a very enjoyable read as far as the rhyming and flow go, yet straight to the point in hard life issues. Renita is troubled by her birth mark, feeling ugly, ashamed and made to feel even worse when nasty Nate begins to call her names. Her sweet sister, Regina, quickly confronts Nate, who unleashes his nasty side on her as well. Each day these sisters encounter nasty Nate and his vile mouth. Renita even gets to the point of wanting to stop at a body shop to see if they can fix her. Her mother encourages Renita and tells her how beautiful she is and how much she loves Renita. She also encourages Renita to ignore the nasty comments that she hears.

Regina and Renita Tackle Nasty Nate’s Nasty Ways! certainly helps the young reader to have some positive ways of combating these all important and hurtful issues that most children encounter. The authors have three different endings to how the story could have gone. It reminds the reader how important our choices are and how the outcomes can change based on those choices. At the end of the book there are key words and their definitions, along with a word search puzzle, a color the characters, a color by numbers, and connect the dots activities. This is a very informative, engaging and helpful book that would be a great resource for parents to share with their children.
